We have had a very busy first half term in Year 1! We received a letter from the boy and penguin asking for our help to design and build a boat that was strong enough to endure a long journey over the rough seas. We also have been busy using our phonics to help us write character descriptions,  non chronological reports and much more.

We have also been learning about the seasons. At the start of our topic we went on a seasonal hunt to find different seasonal signs. We have also been investigating the wind and rain in Science and took part in different experiments about the weather.

In Maths the children have loved the interactive nature of the Singapore Maths curriculum. We have been doing lots of work around counting and number bonds. The children have settled in fantastically in their new classroom and have been working very hard.

Well done Year 1, keep it up!

Autumn Term 2

We discovered some different objects that had been left in our classroom and we tried to work out who might have left them behind and why. We found out it was Spyder who is a secret agent and it is her job to catch the ‘bad guys’. We have done lots writing based around this such as creating fact files, poems and stories all about Spyder.

In Science we have been loved learning all about the human body. We have been learning all about our senses and how important each senses is. We carried out an experiment which involved us losing our sense of sight and we had to record if our partner was able to complete the challenge without their sense of sight. We realised it was very tricky!

In RE we created shoes boxes for the charity Samaritans Purse for the Operation Christmas Child  Appeal, we thought about the reasons why we thought these children deserved a shoe box to open and also loved watching their faces illuminate when they received their gift. We have also been reflecting on the nativity story and loved taking part in the KS1 nativity. We were all very proud of our dancing and singing and received a huge round of applause from the audience and made Miss Whalley, Mrs Baxter and Mrs Williams very PROUD!

In English we have been learning all about Winnie the Witch this half term. We received a letter from Winnie the Witch, it explained that she had changed her black cat Wilbur from black to multi-coloured and needed our help to turn him back to black! She sent us lots of ingredients including bats bloods, wart of toad, dragon scales and much more to help us create our own magic potions!

In Science we have been learning all about animals. We had a visit from Animals Takeover! We got the opportunity to hold and touch a variety of animals including a millipede, an owl, a snake, a sugar glider and many more. We were all very brave during our visit and enjoyed every minute! Some of us were even brave enough to hold a snake around our necks!

In English we received a letter from our local police station asking for our help to solve a range of crimes that had happened in our local area. We looked at a range of evidence including a silver sparkly shoe, a packet of magical seeds, a bread crumb trail, a witness statement, a large cooking pot and much more. We investigated each of the crime scenes carefully and came up with a range of questions to help the investigators. We wrote newspaper reports to inform the local people that a criminal was on the loose. We were so relieved to hear back from Sergeant Walker at the police station who informed us that the culprit was the Big Bad Wolf and has been caught and was awaiting sentencing. He thanked us for all of our hard work in helping to catch the criminal! Year One were absolutely fantastic in investigating the crimes!

In Creative Curriculum we have been learning all about The Enchanted Woodland and had the opportunity to go on a trip to the Fairy Forest. We went on a fairy tale character hunt, we found lots of them hidden high up in the trees and we had to work as a team to try and get them out! We even got to walk through a stream, some of us ended up with wellingtons full of water and soggy feet because the water was very deep in parts, but we loved splashing through it! We had to stomp really loudly when we crossed bridges so the trolls didn’t come and grab our ankles! We were all very brave and made lots of noise! We got to toast marshmallows on the camp fire, they were very yummy! We also had to listen very carefully when the popcorn was being cooked, when we heard it go ‘pop, pop, pop’ it was ready for us to eat! We even got to work as a team to build fairy houses, for the fairies of the forest to live in. We loved having the opportunity to play in the stream with our friends and build water shoots. We also got the chance to walk through thick, squelchy mud. We came back to school covered in mud and with very wet toes... The sign of a FANTASTIC DAY!

At the beginning of the half term we arrived at school to find that our crayons had quit! We were in shock because we hadn’t realised that we had made them so unhappy. We set out on a mission to make every crayon in our classroom feel loved again by creating a picture that used very single colour! We have loved reading the story ‘The day the crayons quit’ and ‘The day the crayons came home’. We have been very busy writing letters to apologise to the different colour crayons and were so relieved when they wrote back to tell us they were happy to be used, as long we loved and cared for them. We also been writing a story about ‘Esteban the Magnificent’ formally known as ‘Pea Green Crayon’ and his adventure around the world when Duncan finally let him out of the house that is!

In Creative Curriculum we have been learning all about space during our topic of ‘Moon Zoom’. We weren’t expecting to come to school one day and find an alien in our classroom! We investigated the scene carefully and explored the different materials found at the crash site. We were shocked when the alien had disappeared in the middle of the day, we hope he arrived back to his planet safely! We have also been busy designing and creating out very own moon rovers, ready for an expedition to Mars. We used lots of different materials to create our Moon Rovers and turned them into a moving vehicle by using axels and wheels. We evaluated our finished product and were very proud of our final result.
