Year 6 have had an interesting term this autumn! We have been for a visit to the Liverpool Maritime Museum to research the event of the sinking of the Titanic. We were all amazed about how the events unfolded in the lead up to hitting the iceberg. During our time there we also attended a workshop. Here, we learnt that there were many reasons why the Titanic sank and found out why some people got into lifeboats and some didn’t. We acted in role of some important people on the ship and decided who deserved a seat in the lifeboat and who didn’t. We were surprised to find out who actually survived and their reasons. This led us to further research about class structure and trade during the early 1900’s.
In our science topic we have stretched our brains and stomach during our topic about the human circulatory system by dissecting a sheep's heart! We did this to identify the four chambers inside it, the valves and capillaries. Even though it was extremely gruesome, the pupils learnt a lot and thoroughly enjoyed the practical investigation.

Year 6 have been trying to match the offspring to its parent, this included matching seeds to plants and eggs to birds and reptiles.
Year 6 went on a visit to Manchester magistrates courthouse to experience what courtroom proceedings were like and learn about how our justice system works. They thoroughly enjoyed dressing up and arguing their case against the crime committed. In the end, the jurors were very kind in their decision and found the defendant ‘not guilty!’.

This term year 6 learnt all about World War II. We identified who were allies and who were the axis powers, why Hitler had such an uprising and how he was defeated. We also looked at life during this time and how rationing helped to ensure that we had enough food to survive. This then led to trying to replicate some old wartime recipes such as trench stew and egg-less sponge cake (which didn't taste too good). We also had a visitor in from the war who brought with her lots of artifacts for us to explore.

This term pupils of year 6 have been exploring classification in science and learning about the binominal system created by Carl Linnaeus. We learnt how to create our own animals by crossing species and why some hybrids can't reproduce if they belong to different classification groups. We have also been learning about the Maya civilisation and where they lived. We had a visit from a Maya warrior who taught us how to count to 10 using the Maya number system and all about the 5 types of sacrifices used by the Maya that were offered to the gods to help crop growth. We also tasted some 100% cocoa but it wasn't as nice as the galaxy chocolate we buy in shops today! After looking at some Maya artifacts and statues, we created our own mini clay models representing some of the famous gods.
